Powhiri

A reminder to all new families that the Powhiri is tomorrow. Every term we welcome new families with a formal powhiri welcome. This is a really exciting event. New parents and their children meet outside the main doors of the school and are called into the hall where staff and our Kapa Haka group present a number of speeches and songs. The powhiri finishes with a morning tea for new parents in the staffroom.

Inquiry: Tuning In

As part of the tuning in part of our inquiry we are developing an understanding around what the word connection means. Today we brainstormed and discussed our initial understanding of this concept. The children discussed how parts of our body are connected, how glue can connect paper and how you are connected to your mother when you are inside her tummy. Perhaps you could have a conversation around this concept, not just the physical connections but how we are connected to one another through commonalties such as a sports team or city you were born, or how systems work together.

Sound and Words of the Week

Our sound of the week: ch

How many things can you think of that start and end with the blend ch?
Can you find anything around the house that starts with a ch and draw it?
Can you find this sound in your reading book or another story this week?

Can you read these words and find them in your reading book?

Cupcake Heaven!

K7 had fun this morning decorating cupcakes to give as gifts for mothers day. New World Island Bay donated the cupcakes, icing and decorations. They set up the hall and let us go for it! The whole school got to make a cup cake! Thanks New World!

Words of the week

Today I have sent home a syndicate newsletter and reading words. These are high frequency words that are commonly used for reading and writing. This is not a spelling list. Their ability to read these words is more important than their ability to write them at this stage. They may already know some of these words so please see this as revision and consolidation.

Fun day Friday!

K7 having a very relaxing Friday afternoon of arts, crafts and technology!

Measurement

We have kicked off Mathematics this term with measurement. The children have been measuring objects using non-standard units. So far we have used our hands and sticks to measure objects around the room. The children are really enjoying the moving and doing this topic requires.
